How heat pumps create hot water out of thin air

Not every roof suits traditional solar. A heat pump draws renewable energy from the surrounding air to heat your water, an efficient, versatile alternative.

More Australians are embracing renewable energy every day, but did you know not every home suits a traditional solar system? Heat pumps offer a clever alternative, harnessing energy from the surrounding air to heat water instead of relying on direct sunlight.

How does a heat pump work?

A heat pump works much like a reverse-cycle air conditioner, but it's connected to a hot water tank. In simple terms:

  • Heat absorption: ambient heat is drawn in and passes through an evaporator coil, where the refrigerant absorbs it and turns to vapour.
  • Compression: the vapour passes through a compressor, becoming a hot gas.
  • Heat exchange: the hot gas runs through a heat exchanger wrapped around the tank, heating the water.
  • Repeat: the refrigerant returns to liquid and the cycle continues.

Even in cold weather there's enough ambient heat to work with. In freezing conditions an electric boost keeps hot water flowing, and a de-icing function prevents ice forming.

Why choose a heat pump?

1. Ideal where traditional solar isn't feasible. Excessive shade, fragile slate roofs, or a roof that doesn't face north can all limit solar collectors. A heat pump doesn't need sunlight, and can often replace your existing storage water heater using the same plumbing and electrical connections.

2. Eligible for government incentives. Heat pumps qualify for Small-Scale Technology Certificates (STCs), reducing the purchase price, and some states offer additional incentives. Your local Solahart expert can apply the benefit at the point of sale.

3. Lower hot water bills. Water heating is one of the largest slices of a household's energy use. By using ambient heat, a heat pump dramatically reduces the energy needed to heat your water.
