5 common solar myths and the truth behind them

Australia leads the world in solar uptake, yet a few persistent myths still hold people back. Let's set the record straight.

Solar is hugely popular in Australia, we're a world leader in rooftop solar per capita, yet a few stubborn myths still make some homeowners hesitate. Here are five of the most common, and the reality behind each.

Myth 1: It's too expensive upfront

Both federal and state government incentives can significantly reduce the upfront cost. Small-scale Technology Certificates (STCs) are available across Australia and can save you hundreds or even thousands, depending on your system and location. STCs can often be combined with state-based schemes for further savings.

Myth 2: Solar doesn't work when it's cloudy or rainy

Solar still works when the sun isn't at full strength, depending on cloud cover, plenty of energy still gets through. And for stretches of cloudy weather, solar water heaters include an electric or gas booster, while solar power systems still draw on the grid (or a battery) to fill the gap.

Myth 3: Solar panels aren't efficient enough

The sun delivers enough energy in an hour to power the world for a year, the key is choosing quality panels. A reputable provider selects panels tested for performance and durability in Australian conditions. Solahart's n-type panels, for example, generate more power per square metre than older p-type panels and are less prone to light-induced degradation.

Myth 4: I don't use much power during the day, so I don't need solar

Even if the house is empty during the day, you can still benefit. A Solahart Home Energy Management System (HEMS) shows when you're generating the most power so you can run appliances like water heaters and pool pumps at the right time. Add a battery and you can store unused solar for the evening, cloudy days, peak-price periods and blackouts.

Myth 5: My roof is too small or too shaded for renewable energy

If your roof isn't suited to solar, a heat pump water heater is a great alternative, it uses the surrounding air instead of sunlight, so no collectors are needed, and it easily replaces an electric water heater. The Solahart Atmos® Frost works in almost any climate, from cold to tropical, and can substantially cut your hot water energy use.
